Annual profection: the lord of the year by your age
Divide your age by 12, find the remainder. Learn which house and which planet's year you're in.

Profection is classical astrology's most practical technique: on every birthday, the chart advances by one house. Age 0 is the 1st house, age 1 the 2nd house, age 12 the 1st house again.
The lord of the year
The ruler of the active house becomes the lord of that year. That planet's natal placement and the transits it receives that year write the story of the year. The profection chart in the Charts section calculates all of this automatically.
- 1st and 10th house years: visibility and identity
- 7th house year: relationships and partnership — the classic marriage year
- 4th house year: home, family, moving
- 12th house year: retreat, closure, inner life
How to calculate it
Every birthday the chart advances one house. Age 0 is the 1st, age 1 the 2nd, age 12 the 1st again. Divide your age by twelve, take the remainder and add one. At 34: 34 mod 12 is 10, so you're in an 11th house year.
The lord of the year
The ruler of the active house becomes the lord of the year. That planet's natal placement, its aspects and the transits it receives write the year's story. Strong and well-aspected natally, the year flows; tightly aspected, the year asks for work.
Year themes by house
- 1st and 10th: visibility, identity, a new role.
- 2nd: money, income, self-worth.
- 4th: home, family, moving, roots.
- 5th: love, creativity, children.
- 7th: relationship and partnership — the classic marriage year.
- 8th: shared resources, transformation, closures.
- 9th: travel, study, a shift of belief.
- 12th: retreat, closure, inner life.
Monthly profection
There's a monthly version too: from your birthday, one house per month. The month that lands on the same house as the lord of the year tends to be the year's most intense. Using both together dates events far more accurately than reading transits alone.
Profection gives you the year's subject; transits give you its dates.
The profection chart in Charts runs this calculation automatically, and the yearly report lists the lord of the year's transits with dates.
