A Solar Return is the chart cast for the moment the Sun returns to your exact natal degree. It sets the tone for the year and shifts depending on the city you're in — which is why the Charts section asks 'which city will you be in that year?'

Reading order

  • The Solar Return ascendant: the overall tone of the year.
  • The house the Sun falls in: the main stage of the year.
  • The Moon's house: where your emotional needs are focused.
  • The most crowded house: where events pile up.
  • How the Solar Return connects to the natal chart: which natal theme gets triggered.

Read it together with your annual profection and it becomes clear which planet is running the year.

Why the city matters

A solar return is the chart for the moment the Sun comes back to its natal degree. The moment is the same everywhere, but the chart is built for the city you're in. Change the city and the ascendant, and the whole house system, changes with it — which is why Charts asks which city you'll be in that year.

Reading order

  • Solar return ascendant: the tone of the year and how you show up.
  • The Sun's house: the main stage.
  • The Moon's house: where your emotional needs point.
  • The busiest house: where events pile up.
  • Ruler of the year: the house of the solar return ascendant ruler.
  • The link back to the natal chart: which natal theme gets triggered.

The most common mistake

A solar return is never read alone. Without laying it over the natal chart the interpretation floats. Asking which natal house the solar return ascendant falls into reduces the year to a sentence: 'your natal 10th is rising this year' means the year runs on the career axis.

Read it with annual profection

Profection names the active house and the lord of the year; the solar return builds the stage. When both point to the same house, the year revolves around one very clear subject. When they differ, the year runs on two tracks.

A solar return starts on your birthday but usually makes itself felt in the second month.

Charts interprets the solar return with technique-specific rules, and the yearly report splits the same year into love, career, money and health.
