What is progression and how is it interpreted?
One day equals one year: secondary progressions show the slow change of your inner world.

Progression is a technique that shows how the natal chart 'matures' over time. The most common form is secondary progression: each day after your birth corresponds to one year of your life. If you're 30, the sky 30 days after your birth is your inner chart for this year.
If transits describe events coming from outside, progressions describe change coming from within. There's no 'this happened to me' in progression; there's 'I have become this person now.' That's why progression readings are done through emotional maturation, shifting needs and identity change.
Progressed Moon: the main indicator
The fastest-moving and most talkative planet in a progressed chart is the Moon. It advances roughly 1 degree per month, meaning it stays in a sign for about 2.5 years and completes its full cycle in 27–28 years. The progressed Moon's sign shows the emotional tone of that period, and its house shows which area of your life is emotionally in focus.
- Progressed Moon in the 4th house: a period of home, family, roots, and turning inward.
- Progressed Moon in the 7th house: a period of forming relationships, partnership, and meeting people.
- Progressed Moon in the 10th house: a period of visibility, career, and stepping out.
- Progressed Moon in the 12th house: a period of closure, rest and cleansing.
When the progressed Moon enters a new house, the focus of your life shifts; these transitions are usually marked by concrete events. When the progressed Moon changes sign, your emotional attitude shifts: someone moving from Sagittarius to Capricorn moves from a cheerful, exploratory phase into a serious, building phase.
Progressed Moon's aspects and timing
Since the progressed Moon advances about 1 degree per month, timing its aspects is easy to calculate. If the progressed Moon is 5 degrees from your natal Saturn, that aspect will complete in roughly 5 months. This is the most practical side of progression: it answers not just 'what's happening' but also 'when.'
Progressed Sun
The progressed Sun advances about 1 degree per year, meaning it stays in a sign for roughly 30 years. When the progressed Sun changes sign, the tone of your life changes permanently. Someone moving from Pisces to Aries shifts from a quiet, receptive period into an assertive, demanding one. This is one of life's biggest turning points and usually happens around ages 27–30 and 57–60.
0 and 29 degrees
In progression, 0 degrees is the first page of a new chapter, and 29 degrees is the last sentence of a closing one. When the progressed Moon is at 29 degrees, you've reached the end of a process; there's a decision that can't be postponed. When it moves into 0 degrees, a brand-new version of the same area begins. Not missing these degrees strengthens the timing of a progression reading considerably.
The progressed lunar cycle
The relationship between the progressed Moon and the natal Moon forms a 27–28-year cycle: progressed new moon (a new life chapter begins), first square (resistance and growth), progressed full moon (a topic peaks and becomes visible), last square (letting go), and back to a new moon. Knowing which phase you're in explains why the period you're living through feels hard, or why it suddenly feels lighter.
How not to read progression
- Reading it like a transit: progression describes maturation, not events.
- Only looking at the Sun: the progressed Moon is far faster and more talkative.
- Forgetting the natal chart: a progressed planet is always read in relation to the natal planet.
- Skipping the critical degrees: most of the timing is hidden at 0 and 29.
Progression + Solar Arc + Transit
The picture becomes clear when all three techniques are used together: progression shows inner change, Solar Arc shows structural turning points, and transit shows the outer trigger. If all three point to the same house or planet, that period is truly a hinge point in your life.
