House systems: Placidus or Whole Sign?

The difference between the two systems isn't just technical, it's interpretive. Which one reads more clearly in which situation?

House systems: Placidus or Whole Sign?

Placidus is time-based and produces unequal houses; Whole Sign treats one entire sign as one house. Placidus gets badly distorted for births near the poles, where Whole Sign reads much more clearly.

A practical approach

  • For psychological interpretation, Placidus offers more nuance.
  • For classical technique (profections, the lord of the year), Whole Sign is more consistent.
  • If a planet lands in a different house depending on the system, read both and see which one matches your actual life.

Why more than one system exists

There is no single correct way to divide the sky into twelve. Placidus divides time, Whole Sign divides signs, Equal divides degrees. Each lays a different grid over the same sky, which is why a planet can change houses between systems.

Placidus versus Whole Sign

  • Placidus: time-based, unequal houses; more nuance for psychological work.
  • Whole Sign: one sign, one house; far more consistent for classical techniques such as profection and the lord of the year.
  • Near the poles Placidus distorts badly while Whole Sign stays readable.

When a planet lands in two different houses

Cast both and test them against your life. If someone's Venus is 6th in Placidus and 7th in Whole Sign and most of their relationships started at work, both systems are telling the truth; experience shows which one dominates.

Practical advice

  • Whole Sign for classical timing techniques.
  • Placidus for personality and psychological depth.
  • Compare results; don't join the system war, use both as tools.
A house system is a map scale. It doesn't change the city, it chooses which streets you see.
