What is Chiron? The wounded healer point and the Chiron return

Chiron is a body orbiting between Saturn and Uranus, discovered in 1977 and quickly adopted by astrologers. In myth, Chiron is the wise centaur who carries a wound that never fully heals yet teaches healing to others. In a chart it means exactly that: an early sensitivity that never entirely closes but makes you an expert in that very subject.

What Chiron describes

• A recurring theme where you feel inadequate and are easily hurt.
• The area where you can naturally help other people.
• The subject you advise well on but struggle to apply to yourself.
• A talent you swing between shame and pride about.

The point of reading Chiron is not to enlarge the wound but to see the skill it became. Many people build a profession out of their Chiron theme: therapists, teachers, coaches and artists often carry a strong Chiron.

Chiron stays in a sign for a long time, so the sign is generational; the personal detail lives in the house and the aspects. Still, the sign hints at the language of the wound: Aries is the right to exist and courage, Taurus worth and security, Gemini voice and intelligence, Cancer belonging, Leo being seen, Virgo competence, Libra value in relationship, Scorpio trust and intimacy, Sagittarius belief, Capricorn authority and achievement, Aquarius belonging and difference, Pisces boundaries and meaning.

• 2nd: self-worth and money; 'am I valuable enough'.
• 4th: family and roots; something missing in the feeling of home.
• 5th: creativity and visibility; fear of the stage.
• 7th: relationships; rejection and equality.
• 10th: career and authority; hesitation about the right to succeed.
• 12th: collective sensitivity; a sadness with no obvious cause.

The Chiron return, around age 50

Chiron's orbit takes roughly 50 years. When transiting Chiron returns to your natal Chiron, usually between ages 49 and 51, the same wound comes back one last time, but now with strength you can carry. Classically, this is when people shift toward meaningful work, make peace with the past and start teaching. Earlier milestones come around ages 12-13, 25 and 38, when Chiron squares and opposes its natal place.

Chiron isn't a wound that never closes; it's the trace that lets you show someone else the way.

• Practise asking for help; Chiron often grows by refusing it.
• Turn it into expertise: study the subject of the wound and share it.
