Retrograde is when a planet appears to move backward across the sky. It's not really moving backward, but symbolically, that planet's themes turn from outward-facing to inward-facing. It's a time to review, complete, and correct rather than to launch something new.

Mercury retrogrades

  • February 26 – March 20, 2026, in Pisces: words get blurry, misunderstandings run high. Written communication will save you.
  • June 29 – July 23, 2026, in Cancer–Leo: family topics and old conversations resurface. Old messages get reopened.
  • October 24 – November 13, 2026, in Sagittarius–Scorpio: beliefs, education, and travel plans get revised.

Venus retrograde

October 3 – November 13, 2026, in Scorpio–Libra. The year's most critical relationship period. During a Venus retrograde, unresolved relationships come back around and questions of value land on the table. Starting a new relationship or getting cosmetic work done during this window is classically discouraged — but it's a great time to close out something old.

The slow planets

  • Jupiter retrograde: until March 11, 2026 — growth comes from within, not from outside circumstances.
  • Saturn retrograde: late July – late November 2026, in Aries–Pisces — responsibilities get redefined, and postponed tasks come back around.
  • Uranus retrograde: September 2026 – February 2027, in Gemini — mental detachment, a shift in ideas.
  • Neptune retrograde: July – December 2026 — the veil of illusion lifts, and seeing the truth gets easier.
  • Pluto retrograde: May – October 2026, in Aquarius — questions of power and control work themselves out internally.

Making a retrograde personal

How much does a retrograde actually affect you? The answer depends on which of your houses the retrograding sign occupies. If Mercury is retrograde in Pisces and Pisces is your 7th house, everything unspoken in your relationship comes to the surface. If the same retrograde falls in your 10th house, it's your work correspondence and career plans that get revised.

A retrograde period doesn't mean 'do nothing' — it means 'don't start something new, finish what you started.'

What retrograde actually means

No planet truly moves backwards. The speed difference between Earth's orbit and the planet's makes it look like it's reversing. Astrologically the function of that planet turns inward. Retrogrades are for reviewing, correcting and completing — not launching.

Planet by planet

  • Mercury: communication, contracts, travel, devices. A rewrite-and-correct season.
  • Venus: relationship value, money, aesthetics. Someone returns; postpone spending decisions.
  • Mars: drive and anger. Not a start-up window, an endurance test.
  • Jupiter and Saturn: growth and responsibility become internal work; little shows on the outside.
  • Uranus, Neptune, Pluto: retrograde half the year; personal only when they touch a natal planet.

Why the shadow period matters

The planet crosses the same degrees three times: before turning, during retrograde, and after. The issue appears in the pre-shadow, gets corrected during the retrograde, and resolves in the post-shadow. If a matter refuses to settle mid-retrograde, that's normal — clarity comes once the planet moves direct.

A working method

  • Finish the half-done instead of starting the new.
  • If you must sign, read twice and check the exit clause.
  • Back everything up; technical failures do spike in Mercury retrograde.
  • Return to an old client, an old file, an old idea — that's the highest-yield move.
Retrograde isn't slowing you down; it's bringing back the step you rushed.

In Charts you can step the transit chart forward or back to see which of your houses holds the retrograde degree; that's where the lesson lands.
